Andrew Muller-Lorish VS MFA Thesis 2013

The Koobeaux Kode

What is my personal relationship to improvisation? Does it operate as a way to explore notions of pure artistic freedom or is it a structured proposition utilized to bring focus to a potentially manic practice? I began researching the writings of Anthony Braxton, Derek Bailey, John Zorn, and Han Bennink, all practitioners of free improvisational music. I believe that improvisational structures allow both a generative, and destructive nature to operate simultaneously in a creative practice. These structures need rigid rules and in order to break them down. Through the examination of these rules I have set up a formal code, referred to as the Koobeaux Kode, that establishes a structure with which I have generated a body of work.
