William Hart BFA Thesis Spring 2012

For my thesis I did a performance entitled “72 Hours: No Sleep.” It was a personal journey into my creative process by means of sleep deprivation. Through the use of art and design prompts written by a third party, which I carried out during the performance, I hoped that I would find a positive link between sleep deprivation and my own creativity. In my thesis essay, I focus on recreating the thought process that led me to the specific conclusion that sleep deprivation can have a favorable affect on creativity, especially in the ideation phase. I also share insight I’ve gained from my experimentation with a new process for idea generation. Although sleep deprivation may not make you more creative, it can (and did in my case) cause an individual to think of ideas that they may not have thought of when well rested.
