In light of the recent discovery of the shadow universe made of mysterious dark matter and dark energy, how do I envision this unknown place and translate this concept into landscape paintings?1 Based on the history of landscape painting, one that includes depictions of heaven and hell, hallucinatory visions and psychological states, it is not an unprecedented undertaking to attempt to paint on a canvas that which is un-seeable but is thought to exist. Much of the language I use in my paintings is based on a long history of landscape symbolism that has developed over the centuries. The strategy of presenting new ideas through science-fiction literature and visual art has informed my approach as well. Far from being unconnected, landscape painting, science-fiction, and space exploration all have in common an investigation into the unknown, and have influenced each other over the years.
