The Appropriation of Persona

The Appropriation of Persona is the result of the attempt to hybridize and incorporate myself into the culture of black metal. The outcome of this attempt is that I did not successfully incorporate and hybridize myself within black metal, the culture, the music, the people or the place of origin. The manner in which I accessed this information, yet ultimately what also ended up being the major barrier between authenticity and me, was the Internet. The outcome was that, as much as I wanted to believe in the Internet as a space for integration and true hybridization, it was virtual and artificial rather than authentic. A key to this discovery was the black metal use of corpse paint. I evaluated my attempt by creating an installation based around my appropriation and co-opting of the stage personas of some major players in the culture of black metal. This serves as an expression of my experience with the construction of personae in the style of black metal.
