Portia Roy BFA Thesis Spring 2011
Presence and Absence
This thesis is an attempt to understand the psychology of family, specifically why some details are omitted from family mythology. I examine a way to think through the complexities of a family, and make meaning of the past in the present. I have created furniture representations of four family members I scarcely knew: my grandmother, Fern, her sister, Ruthie, their father, Edward, and his second wife, Ruth. Each sculpture stands in for an individual, and together they function as a whole, a group, and, of course, as a family. Each piece of furniture bulges with hidden information and secret. I have examined the work of artists Candy Jernigan, Meret Oppenheim, Jamie Isenstein, Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, and Robert Gober in order to inform my own art making.
