Deceleration Through the Act of Erasure

My work is a continuous resistance towards acceleration. A particular slowness and rhythm is sought out in order to remove myself (both psychically and physically) from the speed of contemporary life and to disappear. This erasure is not one of total obliteration, but it is more akin to an extreme form of assimilation into matter. I therefore utilize a form of matter operating much slower than my own stream of thought or physical movement is capable of moving: the matter and materiality of clay. Working with its variant materiality-moist and solid, wet and fluid, dry and dust-like — I utilize the gesture, mark, and process of erasure, to achieve a sensation of deceleration. These actions manifest themselves as stilled forms, shifting site articulations, and performance. The use of veiled light, muted color, and distilled form is intended to both slow down and focus perception in order to provoke a reverent sense of quietude. It is my belief that in this state of reverie, one can fall out of time and enter a space of quiet contemplation where meaning itself can emerge.
