I feel extremely fortunate to have seen the unprecedented rise in popularity of the Internet in my lifetime. When I was born in 1981, it was far more common to see families without computers than families with them. You had to be at home to receive a call. If you were late getting back and missed your favorite TV show, you had to wait weeks or months for the rerun. Thirty short years later, the percentage of US households with computers has jumped from 15% to 60%.1 Most people my age are watching their television on demand through Netflix or Hulu and my eight-year-old son doesn’t know what a curly-cued landline telephone cord is when he sees one. The world has reached an amazing period of instantaneous worldwide communication through the Internet. We love it so much that we’ve invented a stunning array of devices through which to use it, from telephones to video games to e-books. Many of us can hardly remember life before it. So what would happen if it all just… stopped?
