Daniel Sundberg MFA Visual Studies Thesis 2024

A Queer Opulent Utopia is a series of paintings to reclaim the trans community throughout time and a process of healing through a non-violent luxurious space owned by queer bodies. These painting were assembled out of admiration, community, queer future, and nonconformity. I paint as an act of rebellion, stealing from neoclassical and renaissance art where they weren’t being made for us. With so many eras of such beautiful art lacking our representation, I will not accept a history continuing to be written without us. This series forms three oil paintings, holding five members of my community including myself. In these paintings we are at leisure on opulent furniture within old architecture but surrounded by wild new growth of florals, providing non- gendered protection.
