Hannah Wegner BFA Photography Thesis Spring 2024

For my thesis project, I have photographed the crocheted objects I’ve been making, (which include the following: Bee keychains and buddy, Mushroom buddies, Frog big buddy, Star keychains, Octopus keychains, Turtle keychains, Hanging Plants, Headphone Sprouts, Terracotta Sprouts, Charms, Coasters and Bandanas) for the purpose of marketing and selling them on Instagram and Etsy. The prints I have made are just for reference, they live online!

The images I have printed are in sets of 3 per object. These sets online include up to 10 images which you would see on my Instagram and Etsy. (Canary’s Crochet on Etsy and canarys._.crochet on Instagram) Each image is chosen from each category I created while photographing such as the cover image, detail image etc.

The table set up is for people to not only be able to see what I have made and photographed but to be able to buy from me if they choose. This table is not the focus as the project revolves around the advertisement photography I have done for the crocheted pieces.

This project takes ideas of advertisement as a genre of still life and puts it into a whimsical DIY environment. I researched the history of still life and strategies for advertising photography. Two readings that helped me push the effectiveness of my work were Jennel Porter’s Why Red Cabbage and David Bate’s Photography: The Key Concepts.. I considered things that are mentioned in the writings such as, technical skills and literal things within an image, and how these skills and tools can affect how an image could be read as advertisement. The goal of my work is to make photographs that grab a buyer/viewer’s attention by creating eye-catching worlds for the pieces to live in and to make them want the crocheted pieces within the photos.
