Hidden in Plain Sight

In a world filled with monsters, demons, and beasts, there lives a girl named Ember. With glowing teal hair, and a bag that seems to have magic powers, Ember resides in a house made of chocolate chip cookies perched up on a hill. While adventuring out to unknown places for food, friends, and new exciting experiences, Ember encounters menacing creatures from other distant lands. Along with her best friend, an unusually empathetic three-eyed hamster named Tator Tot, Ember travels to places like the Toffee Reeds, the Forlorn Forrest, and the Precipitous Peeks, all in search of magical things that Ember can add to her bag of goodies! But all of this changes when Ember comes face to face with one of these monsters in the Forlorn Forrest… This monster is tall and looming, and thick like a tree truck. It is dark in color and has glowing eyes that cause Ember to slowly descend into sadness. When close with the monster, Ember feels a loss of interest in anything and self isolates to keep Tator Tot from seeing her this way. What will Ember do now?

Ember’s story is an allegory for mental illness and mental health, and the challenges people may face when confronted with certain thoughts and emotions. Each monster in this project depicts one mental illness, and their effects on Ember are possible outcomes of the mental illness the monster is depicting.
