Samuel Collins Sculpture Thesis Spring 2020

My work emphasizes craftsmanship, and examines how things like labor, sentiment, and the process of construction embed objects with meaning. In my work, pattern plays a similar role by creating systems of order and communication. For my thesis project, I have carefully cut plywood panels into elementary shapes and reassembled them in a puzzle-like manner in order to produce interesting patterns and therefore systems of order. After this meticulous reconstruction, the laminated blocks were taken onto the lathe and turned into their final shapes. The process of turning the laminated blocks of plywood revealed yet another pattern within the forms that mimics the structure of wood grain. The individual pieces were assembled into a stool.
