Censoring the Censorship

This paper explores frustration caused by censorship through my personal experience as a Chinese student who has witnessed various forms of censorship in China and beyond. It allows me to cope with the frustrations by looking at Foucauldian ideas of censorship as a matter of power that merely creates an alternative reality. This theoretical idea not only defies conventional understanding of censorship conventional understanding of censorship as a simple and negative result of authoritarian actions but also fortifies my belief that censorship is as complicated as anything can be. In my work, I have a chance to approach to the frustrations, created by censorship, through a more nuanced lens. My artwork examines this complexity and subtle tension through installed objects and gestural marks which highlights my hand in the process. This work offers visual representation to showcase the artist’s journey towards a remedy for the long-lasting experience of facing censorship.
