Shea Ordahl Sculpture Thesis Spring 2019

I have created 49 wheel thrown urns as a meditation on death and healing. I have chosen 49 urns to represent the time period in which I was involved in a car accident that took the life of my partner 4 years ago. The number 49 is specifically the number of months that have past. These vessels have become a collective investigation towards a singular urn that will house the remains of my dearly departed. To me the display of these urns invokes a larger sense of the time that has past since the death of my loved one.

For me this work has been a therapeutic exercise in dealing with the trauma. I experience a quietude while using clay as a physical meditative practice to be able to recenter myself. To have the tactile feedback from the clay allows me to focus on what’s in front of me.The chaotic nature of the firing process lends a poetic paradox of destruction through fire and creation of form through fire. Though the final urn hasn’t been chosen as of yet they all dictate the importance and the struggle to heal as time has moved on. I don’t expect to create the final resting place for sometime and this exploration for such an object will hopefully lead me to the contentment I have sought after.
