Lucy Brown Illustration Thesis Spring 2019

Lucid

Lucid is a 50 page graphic novel that tells the story of a young girl named Ashlyn, and her struggle with the role that sleep plays in her life. We follow her as she delves deeper into a dreamworld of her own creation, and see the detrimental effect this has on her personal relationships and overall quality of life. The narrative explores a disconnect from reality through sleep, presenting how an unhealthy coping mechanism can so easily take over. With the help of her friend, Sonia, and her mother, Ashlyn begins to see the benefits of taking initiative and asking for help; whether that be playing over at Sonia’s house or simply taking time to sit down and talk with her mom. The act of reaching out is extremely valuable. Even with a trusted adult, it can be incredibly scary – especially for a child – to discuss their problems and feelings. With Lucid, it has been my aim to encourage open communication between parent and child, and show the importance of the loved ones in our lives. In the story’s resolution, Ashlyn and her mother communicate with each other and actively take steps to reclaim the relationship they once had, which in turn brings Ashlyn back to reality.
