Avery Bloch Intermedia Thesis Spring 2019
My work usually engages with the possibilities of painting. For this show I’ve selected four objects from my practice, which embody a certain sort of self reflexivity around materiality and authorship. The show today represents a curation rather and a total exhibition of my work these past two terms. All of the works hover between images and objects to varying degrees, and I use that in between space as a way to put pressure on my status as the creator of the works. Questions I’ve been asking myself include: How do certain materials gain meaning? How does one work distinguish itself vs another in terms of lasting importance in my practice? How can I make work which is abstractly about its own context of exhibition and production? Lastly, I’m interested in how my paintings achieve a certain quality of life. I wouldn’t say this is the direct content that I work towards, but I think the exhibition as a whole, and the differences between what I’m showing, relate to it. Liveliness can be seen more as a source and a criteria for success in my work than a content. As I make my work, how can I imbue it with a quality of life that is similar to, but abstracted from, my own life?
