In earlier drafts of issue 1, Midi’s gender identity was more subtly established. I thought referring to the character as “they” would be enough for readers to get a clue. But as Midi continued to be misgendered in my critiques, feedback sessions, and even my thesis proposal, I knew a more explicit scene would be necessary. Kind of shitty, but what can ya do.
