Unmaking the Synthetic

I work with 6×6 ‘ rolls of polyethylene vinyl, mimicking the heating, stretching and cooling process it typically is exposed to. I fuse one corner of the roll to a 3 pound steel hook, uniting the two materials, and mount the hook to ceiling. Once anchored, I slowly work from top to bottom, melting the entire sheet until it chooses its final form. After cooling it is fastened to a two ft. steel chain mounted in the ceiling. Finally when it has become, to me, a body mounted in space. This body is lit by a single LED flashlight and rotates via a box fan. Together, these materials create a kinetic light sculpture.
