These oil/acrylic/pastel paintings exemplify my experimental process as I venture away from my representational roots and examine my approach to referencing life. I incorporated more live observation into my practice, which previously depended on photographic sources. I have been testing the limits and habits of the paint itself, playing with how diverse methods of paint handling affect the level and nature of abstraction.

This release from naturalism somewhat parallels the Modernist agenda that transfixes me. My inspirations include: Francis Bacon, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Louise Bourgeois, Cecily Brown, Henry Moore, David Hockney, and René Magritte. The subject matter of figures in interior spaces reflects my interest in art history/formalism, the body, femininity, and perspective. Furthermore, as a young female artist of today, the examination of my painting practice mirrors my interest in examining myself. I’m learning to enjoy my own company the way I enjoy the company of art. I’m perplexed by artistic evolution and how it can connect to my field of vision and depicting the body in space.
